The film centres on the character of a washerwoman and the everyday problems concerning her pregnant daughter and an alcoholic husband who has been sacked from his job and is having an affair with local barmaid. Critically acclaimed for its naturalistic depiction of working class life this film was provided with a soundtrack by director Elmar Klos (The Shop on the High Street) and with music by Zdenek Liska. A traffic warden and a driver become the stars of a musical in the first film with famous Czech comedians Voskovec and Werich. Transferring to the screen the principle of their 'Liberated Theatre', which took its inspiration from dadaism, circus, jazz, Chaplin, Buster Keaton and American vaudeville, Voskovec and Werich present their view of Prague in the early 30s as a slapstick comedy accompanied by Jaroslav Jezek's beautiful music.
